Since Penny claims she wants to reform, Walters releases her and sends her to live with Mrs. Kingdon. Solomon keeps a clothing store, he has in stock two overcoats of exactly the same make and pattern. Michael Gallagher, who is passing by and in need of an outer garment, notices Solomon's display and buys one of the coats. Shortly after the first sale, Peter Dempsey, a bachelor, happens along and takes quite a fancy to the remaining twin overcoat and Solomon makes another sale. Gallagher and Dempsey dine, at the same time, in the same restaurant. Finishing his meal, Gallagher leaves hurriedly and takes Dempsey's coat, quite naturally mistaking it for his own. When Dempsey is through with his meal, he puts on Gallagher's coat quite satisfied that it is his own. That night Dempsey goes to call on his sweetheart, who admires his new overcoat, and as she helps him off with it, a letter in a woman's hand-writing falls out of the pocket.

Ann Dickson's newly wealthy parents become obsessed with breaking into society, but the young misfit is more interested in studying modern slang and wearing outrageous outfits. She tolerates but does not love "Freddie" Pierson, the useless young playboy her parents have selected for her. On a downtown jaunt, Ann slightly injures a newsboy in a car accident and in this way meets policeman Carey Phelan. She invites him to an outing she has organized for the boy and his pals, and the two fall in love. Ann's parents follow her to the picnic, and after a series of misunderstandings, everyone winds up in jail. Carey reveals to Ann that he is a millionaire's son who, tired of wasting his life, had joined the police force. The chief of police, an old friend of the Phelan family, holds the outraged parents in custody while Ann and Carey sneak away to get married.

Despondent over his loss, Ken decides not to enter the race; later, he reconsiders when he learns that Joan is to wear Herb's pin if Herb wins. Ken wins the race and resolves his misunderstanding with Joan.
